Onycholysis Nails
Onycholysis is the painless separation of the nail plate from the nail bed, typically starting at the tip or sides and progressing backward, creating a white or yellowish discoloration. Common causes include trauma (excessive manicuring, injury), fungal infections, psoriasis, thyroid disorders, or reactions to nail products.
Signs:
Visible separation of the nail from the bed
Discoloration (white/yellow due to trapped air or debris)
Possible thickening or brittleness if fungal infection is present
Treatment:
Trim nails short to prevent further lifting.
Avoid trauma (aggressive manicures, picking) and irritants (harsh chemicals, acrylics).
Treat underlying causes:
Antifungals (for fungal infections)
Thyroid or psoriasis management (if systemic)
Keep nails dry and wear gloves during wet work.
Note: Full recovery takes months as the nail regrows. Consult a dermatologist if separation persists or worsens.
