In this lesson…

Different types of files and what they are used for.

Different nail files serve unique purposes based on their grit level (coarseness) and material:

  • Buffers (500+ Grit) – Smooth ridges and add shine; gentle for natural nails.

  • 240-Grit File – Medium refinement; ideal for shortening and lightly shaping natural nails without splitting.

  • 180-Grit File – Slightly coarser; best for faster shaping of thicker nails or minor edge corrections.

  • Glass/Crystal Files (Fine Grit) – Seal nail edges to prevent fraying; great for weak or peeling nails.

Pro Tip: Always file in one direction (no sawing!) to avoid micro-tears. Use finer grits (240+) for natural nails to maintain strength.
